Custom radiation shielding

The growth of nuclear medicine and a diversifying range of radiopharmaceuticals has seen many older facilities retrospectively refurbished in recent times. As a specialist supplier to hospitals and isotope producers, BriTec can design and manufacture custom-made shielded solutions, customized to a site’s specific needs and layout.

We have experience working directly with architects and structural engineers and our machine workshop in Sheffield works to exacting specifications. We can produce cabinets, storage, and dispensing stations in lead and tungsten. Our tailored solutions - designed specifically for you - allow sites to maximize their available workspace as well as rationalise their workflows for improved efficiency and safety.

So, whether it's an existing radiopharmacy being refitted or a new nuclear medicine department being built from scratch, BriTec can deliver a customized solution for you.

New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton

Futureproofing radiopharmacy

BriTec has furnished a new radiopharmacy at New Cross Hospital. Working closely in collaboration with the team and main contractor, BriTec was able to successfully manage New Cross’ shielding project from design to installation. A host of specialist shielding solutions was supplied to protect staff handling sources of ionising radiation.

This included customized workstations for dispensing PET and SPECT isotopes, shielded bins for the safe disposal of contaminated waste, ring shields for dose calibrators to reduce background, and safes and lockboxes for the secure storage of radioactive materials. Following completion of the work, BriTec spoke to the radiopharmacy team at New Cross, who reflected on the success of the installation and shared their plans for the future.

Clinical Imaging Facility, Imperial College

Customized laminar flood hood installation

Effective HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtered airflow is essential in dispensing workstations to maintain sterile conditions and prevent microbial contamination of medicinal products. Radiopharmaceuticals prepared for intravenous use must meet strict sterility standards in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice, UKRG and ARSAC guidelines, making proper handling of radiopharmaceuticals critical to patient safety.

BriTec recently supplied and installed a custom-made laminar flow cabinet at Imperial College’s Clinical Imaging Facility based at the Wolfson Education Center, supporting PET imaging for patients enrolled in clinical trials. The cabinet was customized and built to the precise specifications of PET Radiographer Robert Punjani and his team.

Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Laboratory, King’s College London

Customized lead solutions

BriTec and Southern Scientific have worked in partnership to successfully install a customized lead workstation for the handling of PET radionuclides at King’s College London. Based in the CARL facility and featuring a built-in Capintec dose calibrator, the custom-made unit was designed to meet exacting specifications to allow the team to work safely and efficiently with radioactive materials.

CARL is a national facility open to academia and industry that specialises in radionuclide production and radiopharmaceutical chemistry for preclinical applications. It houses an 11 MeV cyclotron with supporting infrastructure for high-activity radiosynthesis and radioanalysis. Previously, walls of lead bricks were used to build temporary shields in the lab, but following a refurbishment, a new workstation was required to replace old, existing benching and equipment.
